Excerpt:

“No, I categorize, I don’t judge. We’re all different. We all have a role in life.” He mirrored her pose. “So you’re argumentative.”

“Not usually, but you bring out the best in me.”

His laugh was so loud that it drew the attention of the others in the room. Joss’ face turned red. “And intelligent and beautiful.” His bright green eyes pinned hers and turned a smoky jade. “Go out with me. You won’t regret it.”

“Said the lion to the mouse.” But she couldn’t keep the smile from her face. He was arrogant but witty. Her mind craved the challenge he would provide if her body didn’t betray her first. Step away from the charming, to-die-for handsomeness of this man.

A brunette came up behind the couch, put her head between them and said in a breathy tone, “Don’t forget about the rest of your guests. You promised us a dance.”

“Indeed I did.” He stood up and held out a hand to Joss. “Would you care to dance?”

Joss shook her head. “No, I don’t dance.”
“Never?”
“Never.”
“The gauntlet has been thrown. I’ll ask again,” he said and turned to the

blonde. “C’mon Jackie. Let’s swing.”
Ben grabbed the girl’s hand and moved through the crowd. A whistle

pierced the air. “Swing time,” someone yelled and bodies started moving toward the large porch.

“Easy Breezy,” Becky called out as she swept past Joss. Interest piqued, she stood and moved toward the back of the house. An old tune, sounding like something from the thirties or forties filled the house. Four couples were on the dance floor, including Becky. She recognized two more of the Montgomery siblings, and then it was a blur of movement.

The crowd started to clap and sing along as if this was an expected part of the evening’s entertainment. Joss watched the couples twist, turn, shoot out in spins, and come back together. They bent and stretched, flapped their hands yet never stopped smiling. The pure delight on Becky’s face was contagious, and Joss began clapping along with the rest of the audience.

And then her eyes landed on Ben. His tall, muscular frame moved as gracefully as a cat but with the power of a bull. She couldn’t take her eyes from him. He spun the girl out and pulled her into his side, bent and moved forward, their feet pivoting back and forth in unison as they moved across the room. After another twirl, he pulled her into his chest, her face looking up at him with a huge expectant smile. His shirtsleeves strained against his muscled arms as he swung her up like a rag doll and tossed her against his hip, down against him for a brief moment as their eyes met, and back up on his other side.

When the song ended, she was as breathless as the dancers. He turned and searched the guests. His gaze latched onto her, traveling from her face to her heaving chest and back up to her eyes. That smile, those full lips, sent heat through her and dared her to come closer. The girl tugged at his arm, caught his attention for just a moment, and the spell was broken.

teaser ring box

Excerpt from present day romance:

The scent of turkey met her at Dom’s front door. For a moment, apprehension swept through her at the thought of helping in the kitchen. Then a handsome man stood before her, and she couldn’t wipe the foolish smile off her face. Instead of saying something stupid, she held out the wine.

“In a holiday bag, no less,” Dom said, eyebrows raised. He stepped back to let her in, grabbed her hand, and spun her around to face him. “You look stunning.”

“I just thought that the burlap would give it extra protection if I dropped it, and they only seemed to have holiday wine bags in stock and—”

One finger covered her mouth. As his head slowly lowered, she could feel his breath on her face; heat raced through her core. By the time their lips touched, her legs had turned to jello; she clung to him for support.

Gently pushing her toward the wall, he pressed his length against her and whispered, “I need to make you mine, legally, before I lose all control. You have no idea the affect you have on me, do you?”

“I think that is the most romantic thing anyone has ever said to me,” she said breathless. “Kiss me like that again… please?”

“I’d be happy to oblige if you tell me that isn’t my grandmother standing in the doorway watching us.”

Katie looked over to see Antonia, a wide grin on her face, and quickly pushed on the hard chest that pinned her to the wall. She ran a hand through her hair as the blood rushed to her face.

“Oh Nico, such good Italian blood in you. And not even any mistletoe out yet.” Antonia wiped her hands on her apron and waved to the young couple. “Come now, we have work to do before we play.”

The two followed her in like reprimanded children who showed no remorse, holding hands and snickering. This is silly but it feels so good. Katie accepted the apron and as she pulled the straps behind her, strong hands covered hers.

“Let me,” he whispered in her ear. “I’m good at tying knots.”

 A Love Letter

My dearest Melissa,

I have a confession to make and pray to my gods that you will believe me. Our first meeting was never accidental. Fate pulled you to that hilltop. I had waited for you since the day Merlin took over my training at the age of ten. You have haunted my dreams and filled my heart with hope. I knew the curve of your cheek, the softness of your lips and the kindness in your soul before I ever laid eyes on you.

My quest is essential to end the curse upon my family line. The urgency to break the spell, holding my ancestor Merlin in a tree, has ruled the first born of each generation since the time of Arthur. I have been driven to find and claim you, make you fall in love with me without the use of my magic.

And then you appeared before me and time stopped. The cold casing around my heart cracked a little more with every shared glance.

I realized with each conversation, each touch of your hand that the quest no longer took precedence. If I did not make you mine, my future would be empty. I now see how barren my life has been and cannot live with such a void again.

I willingly give up all my power, all my possessions of any worth, to hold you in my arms and call you my wife. Please, my love, wait for me. Have faith in our destiny. I will come for you.

Your devoted wizard,

Baron Rolf Arbrec

 Excerpt:

The surrounding mist climbed Melissa’s boots and swirled in and around her legs like an affectionate cat. Gentle but firm, it pushed her inside the magical forest. The stillness of the place struck her. The kind of hush that fell over a room when something significant was about to happen. Her heart raced in anticipation. In front of her towered a massive Hawthorne tree with charred branches that seemed to welcome her. Between the gnarled limbs was a large blackened hole that filled the center of the trunk.

“I have been waiting for you.” She jumped at the sound of an old man’s voice. She screamed as a face appeared in the tree. “I do not mean to frighten you, child. I admire your courage. It’s a quality essential to your future.”

“Why am I here?” Melissa asked.

“To meet your Fate,” answered the raspy voice. The distant sound of hoof beats distracted the ghost-like image. “And he has arrived.”

Melissa turned toward the forest opening in confusion. “The mist . . .”

“Yes, it conceals our home from trespassers on the outside but does not impede our view from within.” The elderly man chuckled. “Rolf did not exaggerate your beauty.”

“Rolf?”

The pounding of hooves grew nearer.

“Ah.” The old man shook his head, regret in his eyes. “I must go.”

Horse and rider burst through the tree line. The great beast halted before her, and the stranger dismounted. In one fluid motion, he wrapped a powerful arm around her waist and pulled her hard against his chest.

He spoke only one word. “Melissa.”

The blood pumping through her veins throbbed in her ears. “Rolf?” she whispered, clinging to him, afraid to raise her eyes.

His fingers lightly stroked her cheek and sent a shudder through her body. He lifted her chin, bent his head, and then paused. Uncertain, she looked up, her mouth half-open in a silent question. The intensity and passion in his eyes told her he now claimed her as his own. Their breath mingled for a moment before his lips brushed hers. Then she threw back her head, surrendered to the sheer pleasure of his kiss, and her world shattered.

The soft touch of his mouth sent a shiver through her that made her knees buckle. His chest was hard beneath her palms. He buried his fingers in her hair and forced her head back, demanding more. She clutched at his tunic to hold herself up.

“I must have you.” His teeth nipped her earlobe; the whispered words tickled and teased her neck. One hand roamed the length of her back, sending waves of heat through the core of her body. His manhood pushed against her skirt. She struggled against this desire; her betrothed waited beyond the trees. Her mind told her to run, yet her heart begged to remain. She stopped resisting, leaned into him and gave way to pure passion.

Her mouth opened to return the kiss, only to feel him slip away. Her eyes flew open, and his image wavered then faded into the darkness. “Come back to me. Do not leave me like this.”

Melissa awoke, tears wet upon her cheeks. Emptiness burned in her stomach. She wrapped her arms around herself and curled into a tight ball to shield her body from the pain. She should not have hesitated.

Guest Post & Giveaway by Author Aubrey Wynne

The Short And The Long Of It – By Aubrey Wynne

Some people prefer short stories: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe, The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, or The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County by Mark Twain.

Others enjoy getting to know the characters and settling in for a long read: The Call of The Wild by Jack London, Sophie’s Choice By William Styron, The Magnificent Ambersons by Booth Tarkington or Animal Farm by George Orwell.

I consider any of these good literary choices. Whether I choose short or long for my reading pleasure depends on my time, focus and mood. A long weekend dictates a book I can sink my teeth into and enjoy the intricacies of a plot and subplots. I get involved with main characters and a secondary cast.  If I have an afternoon free, I hate to start a novel and leave in the middle for a week or two. So I choose a short story.

So what is the difference when writing? Which is more difficult for the author? Style often dictates what an author writes. I also think the story itself often decides the length. Some stories are a glimpse into a slice of the character’s life. Others may be detailed accounts that need to be slowly digested and savored. But the styles for each are different.

A novel needs background, detail, and often spans a period of time. Here the author needs to set the tone, give us necessary previous knowledge and include subplots and secondary characters. A short story gets straight to the point, involves fewer characters and usually has only one storyline. The luxury of spending a page describing the valley below does not exist for the short story writer. Each word counts.

If a writer hates to ‘cut his babies’, novels create the perfect vehicle. If you enjoy describing each character’s clothing each time they enter a room or providing an intricate description of the mansion on the hill, by all means pursue the novel. Short story and novella authors usually concentrate on a single plot, add some description and action then wrap it up. This does not mean that characters are not developed or the plot is simple and never complicated: the more intricacies and in-depth the short story, the more talented the author.

So what is your preference as a reader and writer? Short or long? Detailed or to the point?

PRIZE – One random commenter will receive their choice of one my shorts posted below.

The Writing Process: What is the Secret?

My Writing Process

This particular blog hop is all about authors offering others a glimpse into their work, their work schedules, and perhaps their innermost thoughts. Some of us are quite opposite our real life personas.

So who subjected you to this arduous journey through the innermost working of my mind?  The very talented romance author, Aubrey Wynne.  Though Aubrey’s story, featured below, is a holiday story its uniqueness makes it a great read for any time of the year.

Q. What am I working on?

I am currently finishing up the third book in the Nick Spinelli Mystery series, Crazed Reckoning which is scheduled for release by Melange Books in early 2015. Each book in the series revolves around a holiday.  The first book in the series, Covert Exposure, a Nick Spinelli Mystery is set during Christmas and Detective Spinelli is forced to go undercover as Santa Claus to catch a killer.  The second book in the series, Craving Vengeance, a Nick Spinelli Mystery takes place on Valentine’s Day and poor Detective Spinelli finds himself playing the role as a singing cupid as he hunts down a killer.  This brings me back to the third book in the series.  I know by now you know which holiday is next on the docket.  Hint:  Think green!

CovertExposureVJC2CravingVengeance

Additionally, I have two releases scheduled for this spring so I’m in the midst of edits for Taken by Surprise, a contemporary romance novel with suspense elements, and Unforeseen Obsessions, a romantic suspense novel.  Both of these novels will be released by Whiskey Creek Press.

Q. How does my work differ from others of its genre?

Though the Nick Spinelli series has the suspense components to keep you guessing and on the edge about what is going to happen next, I’ve inserted some quirkiness and humor to keep things realistic in regard to everyday life and human behavior.

Q. Why do I write what I do?

At some point, during my adult life I began reading for pleasure, and the two types of books I couldn’t seem to put down were quirky, humorous romances, and thrillers, but not the real gory ones.  Anyhow, I thought it would be fun to mix the aforementioned together to see what kind of peculiar little fictional world I could create.  Once I started writing, I realized just how therapeutic writing was for me.  After a long eight hours at the day job, I can’t wait to get home and start pecking away on the keyboard, and relax and enjoy the little fantasy world my characters whisk me away to for the evening.

Q. How does your writing process work?

I start with a lot of thinking, then some more thinking, and when that turns up nothing, I pay my local Police Department a visit to find out what kind of crazy stuff has gone on in our little City recently (my day job is at City Hall).  I get a few ideas from the PD but because our City is safe and secure – Thank goodness – I’ve had to learn to embellish quite a bit on our drab little hometown events.  Fast speed ahead, once I get the main plot worked out in my head I start typing, and before I know it my characters are telling me how it’s going to be.  Though they usually let me pick the beginning and the end of the story, the middle is theirs.

Q. Who will we meet next week?

First I’d like to recognize author Mary Hughes.  Mary is a lovely lady who I met early in my publishing life.  She writes RED HOT paranormal books that you just can’t put down.  Mary is celebrating a new release week this week for the book pictured below.  Downbeat is the 7th book in her Biting Love Series.
